FROM ME THIS WEEK

Trying, learning, and adjusting

A cross-out failures, now and a hand heart.

As this year wraps up, I’ve been thinking less about wins and more about the paths that quietly shaped how I work. And most of them came from trying things that didn’t last.

I graduated as a Chinese Medical Doctor in 2018 and later pivoted into design in 2021. That shift came with a lot of failures. I struggled in corporate roles where my voice felt small. I tried remote work and felt isolated. I jumped into freelancing too early and learned how hard client communication can be.

None of those paths worked perfectly, but each one taught me something about how I want to work and grow.

My design carries a similar process: Start with something standard, then tweak it until it feels me. This week’s tutorial is one technique to help spice up your hero.

Let’s dive in.

Video Tutorial is linked below.

Step 1 - Create the Base

Start with 2 text fields, then draw a rectangle:

  1. Width – Take the widths of both words, average them.

  2. Height – around 30% of width

This rectangle is the guide for text warping.

Setup the rectangle base.

Step 2 – Warp the First Text

Open the Warp plugin.

  1. Pick the preset shown here

  2. Angle: 15°

  3. Select your first text.

You’ll see it bend into the shape instantly.

Step 3 – Warp the Second Text

Select the rectangle again.

  1. Choose the next preset

  2. Angle: –15°

  3. Select your second text → Create

Now both texts tilt upward.

Step 4 – Arrange and Adjust

  1. Stack them vertically and adjust the spacing until it feels balanced.

  2. Remove any strokes and group everything.

Clean up the text stack

Step 5 – Apply Depth

  1. Wrap your group in a Frame

  2. add Auto Layout padding (40).

  3. Add a 4px stroke.

  4. Open the Skew plugin and set Vertical Skew to –10°.

Apply skew to the text.

Step 6 – Tada!

Result time.

Warp + Skew gives your text a dynamic, dimensional feel with almost no effort. It's perfect for headers, posters, or layouts that need personality.

One last thing before I wrap up the year.

Next up is a new tutorial on 3D live text shadow. It’s a simple technique that makes typography feel dimensional. It looks advanced at first, but once you see the setup, it’s very practical to use in real projects.

This will be the last email you get from me this year. Thank you for learning, experimenting, and designing alongside me. I’ll see you in the new year with more ideas to try.
