FROM ME THIS WEEK

No More Batches

New Cadence cover

I changed how I make videos this time. I used to batch five at once, release weekly, then go silent for months researching the next batch. Now I'm going end to end, one video at a time.

The production time per video drops because the memory stays fresh during entire edit. And you won't have to tolerate my silence just to get bombarded with a weekly batch after. 😂

This is a new process for me too. Bear with me while I find a reliable cadence.

This week's tutorial is about adjusting too. You don't nail a responsive layout on the first try, you adjust until it stretches and holds.

So expect this newsletter to drop every 2 to 3 weeks, or whenever a video's done. :)

Video Tutorial is linked below.

Step 1 - Frame Setup

  1. Study the reference: 3 rows, 4 columns.

  2. Set grid and padding: 3 rows x 4 columns

  3. Group elements into one frame per row (⌘⌥G) before placing

setup the basic grid

Step 2 – Logo + Nav Rows

  1. Logo: span 4 columns, then set constraints on the elements inside

  2. Nav: turn off automatic positioning, drag into 2nd grid item. span 2 columns

set the second row height same as the first

Step 3 – Content Row

  1. Stack each row vertically, and lock image aspect ratio. Then add a 4x1 grid, span the middle piece 2 columns.

  2. add top padding and a top stroke, then add two more cols for vertical dividers.

setup nested grid

Step 4 – Responsiveness

  1. Set news pieces height to hug, dividers to fill. Then set content and section frame height to hug

  2. Add max width to the content frame, then set section min-width to 1280px

setup min width

Step 6 – Tada!

Hierarchy doesn't have to be boring. With this logic, you get a high-energy Memphis look that still delivers clear information.
